What is EIFS?
Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems are exterior multi-layered wall systems that are used on commercial buildings and residential homes. EIFS typically consist of the following components:
- Insulation board, made of polystyrene and polyisocyanurate foam, which is attached to the exterior wall substrate with mechanical fasteners and or adhesive
- A durable water-resistant base coat, which is applied on top of the insulation and for added strength reinforced with fiberglass mesh
- An attractive and durable finish coat which is both colorfast and crack-resistant
EIFS provides superior energy efficiency as well as a more flexible design capability than other siding options. As can be seen in the picture at right, EIFS can not only be used for flat wall siding, but can also be used to provide for extensive detail.
